There was a point where my social media feed started making me feel like I needed to replace every single thing in my house immediately or my family would spontaneously combust from microplastics 😅

And honestly? That mindset just isn’t realistic for most families.

I’m not trying to become a perfectly plastic-free household overnight. I’m just trying to make small, practical swaps where they make sense — especially for the things we use every single day.

Because the truth is, reducing plastic exposure doesn’t have to mean throwing away your entire kitchen and spending thousands of dollars on aesthetic glass containers from TikTok.

Little changes add up.

So lately, I’ve been slowly swapping out a few things in our home for more natural materials, and these are the easiest changes I’ve made so far that actually felt doable.

Why Reduce Plastics at All?

I’m definitely not here to sound all doom-and-gloom about plastics. We live in the real world. Plastic is everywhere, especially when you have kids.

But I do think it makes sense to reduce it where we reasonably can.

A lot of plastics — especially older or damaged plastics — can release chemicals when heated or heavily used over time. And while I’m not stressing about every single snack wrapper, I do feel better making swaps for items we use daily for cooking, eating, and food storage.

My goal isn’t perfection. It’s just being a little more mindful.

And honestly? A lot of the swaps are prettier anyway.

Easy Plastic Swaps I’ve Already Made

Bamboo Plates for My Son

This one felt SO easy.

We swapped out most of my son’s plastic plates and bowls for bamboo kid dishes, and I actually love them way more. They’re lightweight, durable, cute, and somehow survive the dishwasher at our house, which honestly deserves an award 💪

This felt like one of the simplest low-tox kitchen swaps because kids use their dishes constantly.

Bonus: they don’t look like neon cartoon plastic exploded in my cabinets anymore.

Wooden & Stainless Steel Cooking Utensils

I started replacing old black plastic cooking utensils with wooden and stainless steel ones.

Not only do they feel sturdier, but they also don’t melt into oblivion if they accidentally touch the pan for 0.2 seconds.

I kept this super simple and just replaced things as the old ones wore out instead of tossing everything all at once.

That’s kind of my approach to all of this:
replace slowly, not dramatically.

Wooden Cutting Boards

This was another easy switch that made my kitchen feel instantly nicer.

I still have a couple plastic cutting boards for raw meat because they’re easier to sanitize, but for everyday fruit, veggies, bread, and quick lunches, I mostly reach for wooden cutting boards now.

They’re functional, they last forever if you take care of them, and they make me feel slightly more put together than I actually am.

Low-Tox Swaps I Want to Try Next

I’m definitely not finished, but these are a few realistic swaps I’d love to make over time:

  • Silicone snack bags instead of disposable zip bags
  • Stainless steel lunch boxes
  • Switching to cleaner dishwasher detergent
  • Replacing scratched-up nonstick pans eventually
  • More natural fiber cleaning cloths
  • Glass spray bottles for homemade cleaners
  • Beeswax wraps for food storage

Again — slowly.

I think the internet sometimes makes healthy living feel all-or-nothing, and that mindset just burns people out. I’m much more interested in sustainable changes that actually fit real mom life.
